Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS ) or prostatitis is a condition that affects 2-6% of the male population and can last over a year at a time (Doiron & Nickel, 2018),

I start off this because commonly in the clinic I’m asked, “how common is this? Am I the only person suffering with this?”

In truth I’d argue that the numbers are higher (but that is for another day).

This can be a very debilitating condition compacted to the frustration usually left by men who feel dismissed by some healthcare professionals. Especially after “successfully” being cleared of a number of invasion examinations only to hear “there is nothing wrong” or the doubly awful “it’s all in your head”.

These frustrations are examined by Tim Parks' Novel “Teach Us to Sit Still” who documents his experience with CPPS/Prostatitis. Also featured in the graphic novel “Back, Sack & Crack (& Brain): A Rather Graphic Novel About Living with Embarrassing Health Problems” by Robert Wells.

Symptoms can present in several ways, penis pain, testicular pain, lower abdominal pain, rectal pain, ejaculatory pain and so on. And flare ups are common making it a difficult one to treat alone.

Take home message is that you are not alone, treatment is available.
