If you or your partner are preparing for—or recovering from—a radical prostatectomy, you are likely dealing with a massive amount of overwhelm.

Your surgical team’s absolute priority was removing the cancer and saving your life. That is exactly what they should be focused on. But far too often, the recovery of your continence and your erectile function is treated as an afterthought. You are handed a generic leaflet on the way out of the hospital and told to go home, do some Kegels, and "hope for the best."

As a Co-Author of the National POGP 'Pelvic Floor Advice for Men' Guidelines, and a specialist Men's Health Physiotherapist here in Coventry, I am here to tell you: You deserve a much higher standard of care.

The Mechanical Reality of Prostate Removal

To understand why you are leaking, you have to understand the mechanics of what just happened to your body.

When your prostate is removed, your anatomy fundamentally changes. The primary internal valve that previously stopped your urine from leaking is altered. Overnight, your pelvic floor muscles suddenly have to do all the heavy lifting.

If your pelvic floor is uncoordinated, weak, or hyper-fatigued from doing the wrong exercises, you will struggle with leaking when you cough, sneeze, stand up, or walk.

This isn't just "bad luck." It is a mechanical issue, and it requires a specialist mechanical solution. Blindly doing hundreds of Kegels without a proper assessment can actually fatigue the muscle further, making the leaking worse.

The Elite Recovery Timeline: Pre-Hab vs. Post-Op

Rebuilding your continence doesn't involve guessing. It involves exact, neuromuscular rehabilitation. Here is the clinical timeline we use at Delaney Physiotherapy to get men their control back:

  • Pre-Hab (3 to 4 weeks BEFORE surgery): The best time to start rehab is before the operation. We build vital muscle memory and isolate the exact muscles you will need before the area is subjected to surgical trauma.

  • Post-Op (Immediately after catheter removal): If you have already had your surgery, we start hands-on, mechanical rehabilitation the moment your catheter comes out to rebuild your function safely and efficiently.

Stop Guessing. Let's Get Your Control Back.

Life after prostate cancer shouldn't be defined by anxiety, pads, and restricted movement. You can regain your dignity and your control, but it requires the right roadmap.

If you are in Coventry or the West Midlands, don't leave your recovery to chance.
